Frequently Asked Questions
1. What do I need to hire a car?
You need a valid driver’s license (from your home country or an International Driving Permit), a passport or national ID for identification, and a credit card or cash for the security deposit. Renters must be at least 23 years old with a minimum of two years’ driving experience.
2. How much does it cost to hire a car
Rates vary by vehicle type, rental duration, and whether you choose self-drive or chauffeur. Economy cars start from around KES 3,500–5,000 per day, while 4x4 SUVs and safari Land Cruisers range from KES 8,000–15,000 per day. Long-term and weekly rentals receive discounted rates. 3. Do I need to pay a security deposit
Yes, a refundable security deposit is required for self-drive rentals. The amount depends on the vehicle class (typically KES 10,000–30,000). It is refunded within 7–14 days after the vehicle is returned undamaged and with a full fuel tank.
4. What is the min. & max. rental period?
Minimum rental period is 24 hours (one day). Maximum rental period is flexible – we offer daily, weekly, monthly, and even long-term leases for several months.
5. Is insurance included in the rental cost?
Basic third-party insurance is included in all rental rates. Comprehensive insurance (covering damage to the rental vehicle) is available as an optional add-on at an extra daily fee. We strongly recommend it for peace of mind.
6. What should I do if I have an accident?
Immediately ensure everyone is safe and call our 24/7 emergency hotline (number provided in your rental documents). Do not move the vehicle unless it poses a hazard. Take photos of the scene and any damage. File a police report within 24 hours. Our team will guide you through the next steps and arrange a replacement vehicle if needed.
7. Can I take the rental car outside Kenya?
Yes, but only with prior written approval from Onboard Safaris. Cross-border travel to Tanzania, Uganda, or Rwanda requires additional permits, insurance, and a higher security deposit. A cross-border fee applies. Unauthorized cross-border travel voids all insurance coverage.
8. Can someone else drive the rental car?
Yes, but only if they are registered as an additional driver on the rental agreement. Additional drivers must meet the same age and license requirements and present their ID at pickup. A small daily fee may apply for each extra driver.
9. Is fuel included in the rental price?
No, fuel is not included. Vehicles are supplied with a full tank and must be returned full. If you return the vehicle with less fuel, you will be charged for the missing amount at current pump prices plus a refueling service fee.
10. Can I hire a car without a driver
Absolutely. We offer both self-drive (no driver) and chauffeur-driven options. Choose self-drive if you prefer independence and have a valid license.
11. Can I extend my rental period?
Yes. Please contact us at least 24 hours before your scheduled return date. Extensions are subject to vehicle availability. A late return without prior notice incurs a penalty fee equal to 1.5x the daily rate.
12. Do you offer pickup & drop-off services?
Yes. We offer free pickup and drop-off within Nairobi central area and major hotels. For Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) or Wilson Airport, a small airport transfer fee applies. We can also deliver the car to your home, office, or any location within Nairobi. Out-of-town deliveries (e.g., Mombasa, Naivasha) are available at an extra cost.
